Nottingh Hill Carnival

Dal 1965 Londra ospita, durante l'ultimo week-end di agosto,  nel suo quartiere di Notting Hill il più grande Carnevale caraibico al mondo dopo quello di Rio de Janeiro. Milioni di persone proveniente da tutto il mondo si riversano a Notting Hill per assistere alla sfilata dei  costumi coloratissimi; il festival fu ideato dagli immigrati provenienti dai caraibi (in particolare dalla Giamaica) a Londra per poi diventare un vero carnevale in piena regola. Piatti e drink tradizionali sono preparati nelle centinaia di chioschi che costeggiano le vie, e ogni strada ha il suo 'sound system' che diffonde musica ad altissimo volume: il Carnevale di Notting Hill non è solo un evento a cui assistere, ma una grande festa dove tutti sono invitati.

Al Carnevale possono partecipare tutti, senza dover pagare un biglietto d'ingresso: basta recarsi nel quartiere e buttarsi nella mischia.

Ristoranti, locali stravaganti, negozi originali, bancarelle di antiquari: a Notting Hill si respirano le atmosfere vivaci tipiche di un quartiere dove risiedono artisti e gente comune, inglesi e no, in un insieme di culture e ambienti diversi.

Remembrance Day

Each year in November, the United Kingdom remembers the men and women who gave their lives in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts. 

Ogni anno nel mese di novembre, il Regno Unito ricorda agli uomini e alle donne che hanno dato la vita nelle due guerre mondiali e nei conflitti successivi.

11 novembre è conosciuta come la Giornata dell'Armistizio o Giorno della Memoria.

Durante la prima guerra mondiale, allo scoccare dell'ora 11 del giorno 11 del mese11 ° nel 1918, i cannoni del fronte occidentale rimasero in silenzio dopo più di quattro anni di guerra continua.

In molte parti del mondo, la gente osserva due minuti di silenzio alle ore 11 del 11 novembre.

Remembrance Sunday is the second Sunday in November, the Sunday nearest to 11 November. Remembrance Sunday sees special events and services relating to remembrance.

• Passing Bells at LSO St Luke's: Poems on the Underground and the Apollo Chamber Orchestra return to LSO St Luke's with an international programme of poetry and music inspired by past and present wars. 12 Nov
